Crohn’s Disease: Endoscopic View of Aphthoid Ulcers. This is a view through the endoscope in a patient with Crohn’s disease. The arrows are indicating pale, tan spots which represent aphthoid ulcers. The pale, tan material is probably either barium or exudate in the tiny ulcer craters.

Crohn’s Disease: Aphthoid Ulcers. This is a portion of a colon opened longitudinally from a patient with acute activation of Crohn’s disease. One of the earliest areas of breakdown in the mucosa can be seen as tiny pin-point erosions of the surface.

Crohn’s Disease, Air Contrast Barium Enema Showing Aphthoid Ulcers. In this study a barium enema has been evacuated. The colon is then inflated with air and tiny aphthoid ulcers can be seen as tiny white dots where the barium was retained in the pin-point minute mucosal erosions known as aphthoid ulcers. Aphthoid ulcers can be seen along the entire length of the bowel represented in this picture.

Crohn’s Disease. This is a low power picture of colon mucosa and part of the submucosa. An irregular crack-like breach of the mucosa can be seen extending into what appears to be a GALT lymphoid follicle. Some small lymphoid aggregates are also present nearby. The mucosa away from this ulcer appears relatively undisturbed. This illustrates how patchy the inflammatory process is in Crohn’s disease.
